EV-Swapped Muscle Cars: The Coverage Gaps Nobody Discloses
You can buy an electric crate motor for a classic car today, from a catalog, with a part number. What you cannot find is a single major collector-car insurer that publishes a position on covering the result. We went through the published eligibility and modified-vehicle guidelines of the carriers that dominate this market, and the topic is simply absent. That absence is the story, and it has practical consequences for anyone considering the conversion.
The Hardware Is Real and Retail
This is no longer a one-off engineering exercise. Chevrolet Performance's eCrate package, part number 19433445, is a 200-horsepower, 400-volt system with a 66 kWh lithium-ion pack that mates to a GM four-speed automatic, listed by parts retailers at $27,101.66 and sold exclusively through Chevrolet Performance approved installers. Ford's Eluminator crate motor — a 281-horsepower, 317 lb-ft unit weighing 205 pounds, derived from the Mustang Mach-E GT traction motor — has been sold online since November 2021 at $4,095.
Both figures understate the project considerably. The eCrate package explicitly does not include the battery, the transmission installation kit, the power steering pump, the brake vacuum pump, or the dual-level charger. The Eluminator is a motor and nothing else; completing a conversation around it has been reported to require roughly $20,000 in additional components. A realistic conversion is a five-figure parts bill before anyone turns a wrench, and frequently a six-figure project when professional labor is included.
Why the Cost Matters to Coverage
A converted car is a heavily modified vehicle whose modification value is invisible to every automated valuation tool — the same structural problem restomod owners face, with an additional wrinkle: the drivetrain is not merely different from stock, it is a category of technology the base vehicle never had. Agreed value with a supporting appraisal is not a nice-to-have here. It is the entire coverage.
What the Carriers Actually Say: Nothing
Hagerty maintains a dedicated modified-vehicle page that names six categories it covers — hot rods and street rods, restomod classics with modernized drivetrains and safety features, pro-street high-horsepower builds, custom cruisers, custom imports, and replicas. Electric conversions and engine swaps appear nowhere on it. Hagerty's separate agent-facing eligibility guidelines, which are considerably more granular and go into detail on storage types, mileage bands, and ineligible vehicle classes, likewise contain no EV-conversion provision.
We looked for an equivalent published position at the other major collector carriers and did not find one. Content-marketing articles elsewhere on the web assert that particular insurers will write EV conversions, but no carrier states this on its own site, and we are not going to repeat a claim we could not verify at the source.
What Silence Does and Does Not Mean
An unpublished position is not a refusal. Collector carriers underwrite unusual vehicles case by case all the time, and several may well write a professionally converted car without hesitation. What silence does mean is that you cannot rely on a website, a comparison article, or a general modified-vehicle program to tell you where you stand. You have to ask, and you have to get the answer attached to your policy.
The Questions to Ask Before You Convert
Ask these before the car goes to the shop, not after. A conversion is difficult and expensive to reverse, and discovering a coverage problem afterward leaves you with bad options.
- Will you write this vehicle after conversion, at agreed value? Get it in writing. A verbal yes from a call center is not an underwriting decision.
- What documentation do you need to set the value? Expect to supply invoices, labor hours, component part numbers, installer credentials, and photographs. Ask specifically whether a professional conversion is required or whether a documented home build is acceptable.
- How is the battery pack treated in a partial loss? This is the question with the least publicly available answer and the largest dollar consequence.
- Is the car covered while charging at home, and does that interact with my homeowners policy? Ask both carriers. We found no authoritative published guidance on this interaction, which is itself a reason to get it addressed specifically.
- Does the conversion change my storage requirements? Some facilities and some policies treat high-voltage battery storage differently from a car with a fuel tank.
- If the car is totaled, what happens to the pack, and does any keep-the-salvage provision apply? See below — this is a genuine open question.
The Battery Is the Risk Nobody Prices Out Loud
In a conventional muscle car, a damaged engine is a repairable component with a known replacement cost and a deep used-parts market. A damaged high-voltage battery pack is a different kind of object. Industry sources put pack replacement costs in a broad range of roughly $5,000 to $18,000 for 2026, and note that insurers frequently total a vehicle after a battery event even where a fire was contained quickly, because many packs are not designed to be repaired and cannot be safely inspected internally after a structural impact.
Those figures come from secondary and agency sources rather than from carriers or a regulator, so treat the range as directional. The underlying dynamic is not in dispute, though, and it is worth understanding: on a conventional classic, a hard impact to the drivetrain is a repair. On a converted car, a hard impact near the pack can convert a repairable accident into a total loss — which is exactly the scenario where the accuracy of your agreed value becomes the whole ballgame.
The Question We Could Not Answer
We found no published guidance from any collector carrier on salvage disposition of a converted classic after a total loss — specifically, whether keep-the-salvage provisions apply, who takes possession of the pack, and how a damaged pack is handled and disposed of. If you are converting a car you would want to rebuild after a bad day, this question deserves a written answer from your carrier before you start.
Professional Conversion Versus Home Build
The Chevrolet Performance eCrate's approved-installer requirement is instructive beyond GM's own program. High-voltage systems carry real installation risk — improper isolation, inadequate fusing, unsupported pack mounting, and poor thermal management are not cosmetic errors — and underwriters evaluating an unusual risk look for evidence that someone qualified did the work.
Documentation practice for a converted car's agreed value follows the same shape as any high-end modified build: bills and invoices, labor costs and hours, receipts, photographs, and professional certifications. The difference is that installer credentials carry disproportionate weight here. If you are choosing between a documented professional conversion and a cheaper informal one, understand that you are also choosing between two different insurance conversations.
Reversibility Is a Value Question Too
The collector market has not settled its view on electric conversions, and reasonable people disagree sharply about whether a converted car is enhanced or diminished. That unsettled state is itself relevant to how you insure it, because an appraiser has fewer comparable sales to work from than they would for a conventional restomod, and an underwriter has less loss history to price against.
Two practical consequences follow. First, keep the original drivetrain if you possibly can, stored and documented — a reversible conversion preserves optionality that an irreversible one destroys, and the original numbers-matching engine is itself an insurable asset worth scheduling. Second, expect the valuation conversation to require more of you than it would for a well-trodden restomod. Thin comparables mean your documentation is doing more of the work.
The One Thing to Get Right
Written confirmation from your carrier, before conversion, that they will insure the finished car at a stated agreed value with the documentation you plan to provide. Everything else in this article is detail. That single document is the difference between an insured project and an expensive discovery.
Where This Is Heading
Conversions are becoming ordinary faster than the insurance products around them are adapting. The hardware has moved from custom fabrication to catalog part numbers in a few years; carrier guidelines have not moved at all. The reasonable expectation is that published positions will appear as claim volume accumulates and carriers learn what these cars actually cost to fix.
Until then, the burden is on the owner. That is not ideal, but it is workable — the tools are ordinary ones. Document the build thoroughly, use a qualified installer, get an appraisal that engages with the conversion specifically, and obtain written carrier confirmation before you commit. Owners who do that are in a strong position. Owners who assume their existing policy simply follows the car through the conversion are not.
